Description of the Bird

The ID was obvious, and my documentation is primarily to document the age and sex of the bird.

The buff head and neck ruled out older males, and the highly corrugated tail ruled out young birds. Although the corrugations are not obvious in my photo, every pale band on the tail is the low part of an individual corrugation (as visible in this pic: ML550330011 - Anhinga - Macaulay Library). According to Pyle (2008, near bottom of p. 333), female Anhingas are ageable using the extent of corrugation and the width and distinctness of the pale tip on the central rectrices (the r1s). The extensive corrugation and wide tip of these feathers are relatively obvious in my submitte photo.

Similar Species Discussion

In the New World, there are no similar species.

Previous Experience

I have seen >20,000 Anhingas, although I tallied the lion's share of those as the hawk counter for two falls at Smith Point, TX, where the species goes by in flocks, with the flocks frequently numbering 500-1000 individuals. I have lived in Florida on multiple occasions, where Anhinga is an everyday species, and I have studied ageing and sexing of Anhingas extensively in Pinellas County.

Location Map

The marker on the map shows an approximation of the location of this report. The marker is generated using a prioritized Logic base:
1) If the observer has entered coordinates, they will be shown.
2) No specific coordinates are available but the location is mappable.
3) A generic location with no specific coordinates is mapped to the center of the reported county.
