Description of the Bird

A large white owl, with extensive dark barring on the undersides, scaps, and back. The face was white, as was most of the head and nape. There was a patch of darker feathering on the nape. Pics may allow aging and sexing once I get home in a couple of weeks.

Similar Species Discussion

The large head and overall shape were enough to rule out anything other than an owl. The extensive white and round head rule out Great Horned Owl, and the size rules out any other likely owls.

Resources Used

Memory -- no guides consulted.

Previous Experience

I have seen several dozen Snowy Owls and more Great Horned Owls. I have seen at least several of all of our larger owls.
