Description of the Bird
Black eyestripe connected to black chinstrap, barred plumage, looked like small chicken, mostly gray wings/color.
Similar Species Discussion
I have never seen this bird before so I was surprised. I thought it might have been a downy woodpecker but knew it wasn't because the eye stripe connects to the chin strap. It also appeared larger and I had observed this bird on the ground (seeming to be grazing), not in a tree. I also thought maybe a Hairy woodpecker, but decided no for the same reasons.
Previous Experience
I have taken an ornithology class at CSU but don't have much experience outside of that. I knew I had never seen this bird in the area and thought it was strange. I couldn't find any records of the chukar near sloan's lake. I am not even sure it's a chukar I just don't know what else it would be.
