Description of the Bird

Traveling in remote section of San Juan mountains on a Search and Rescue mission (so far off road or trail), Thomas got good photos when this bird flushed, then perched. He and his search partner noted the bird seemed about 10 inces long, had dark rim around face. They did not know if it was a saw-whet or boreal until we circulated the photos around. Habitat was fir, aspen in a creek bottom, surrounded by burn, at about 9,500 feet elevation. They walked on without the bird flushing again. The location is accurate but note again that it is miles from a road or trail.

Similar Species Discussion

Mostly compared to Northern Saw-whet Owl.

Previous Experience

The identification was based on consulting others who know the birds.
