Description of the Bird
John Roser first spotted a small bird with a green back coming out of tall grass and flying into the low part of a shrub. Carol Comeau took photos. We both instantly recognized the bird as a female/immature Painted Bunting. The bird had a fairly bright green back and greenish/yellow undersides. There were no wingbars or other obvious markings other than a pale eyering. The bird had a fairly light colored bill. See photos. The bord continued foraging low in the shrubs. We never saw it more than 3 ft off the gorund. At one point it did perch on the fence surrounding the yard it was in. Ebiord report: https://ebird.org/checklist/S195102459
Similar Species Discussion
None considered. We had been looking at multiple female/immature type Painted Buntings in our yard in Portal, AZ 2 weeks previously. We felt confident of the ID.
Previous Experience
We see Painted Buntings (male, female, immatures) in late summer early fall in Portal, AZ. We get all 4 Bunting species in our Portal, AZ yard: Painted, Varied, Lazuli, and Indigo. We have also seen this species in Texas.
