Description of the Bird

This beautiful bright red male bird had a black mask extending from the bill through the eye to blend in with the black back, wings and tail. The bird was seen flycatching and also plucked a caterpillar from the ground, banging it against the fence several times and then consuming it. This was the only vermilion flycatcher seen, and we didn't hear him vocalize.

Similar Species Discussion

There was no mistaking this male vermilion flycatcher with another species.

Previous Experience

I have seen a vermilion flycatcher one other time, at the Rawhide Energy Plant in 2022.
