High-altitude pinyon/juniper, with predominance of pinyons. Feeder was in a pinyon.
Zeiss 10 x 40 binoculars
Sun was in the south and east, clearly illuminating the bird.
Description of the Bird
Red cap, dark area around beak, brown streaks on white background, clear chest, similar size to a Pine Siskin.
Behaviors: She ate seeds at a sunflower seed feeder for approximately 10 minutes--far less skittish than the 2 other Common Redpolls I had seen at our feeders in Dec.
Call: None heard.
Similar Species Discussion
Lack of yellow ruled out American Goldfinch. Slight size and pattern of color eliminated House Finch. Unstreaked chest and pattern of color ruled out Pine Siskin.
Sibley Guide to Birds, studied several weeks early at the first arrival of a Common Redpoll at our feeders.
This bird was the 3rd Common Redpoll we had had this winter.
